In the midst of a climate and energy crisis, as small producers, we think that some practices, which have always been established as correct and effective, should be reviewed or at least investigated and questioned.

Reduce the negative impact of glass
The single voice that, in wine production, has the most impact in terms of CO2 emissions is the production of glass for bottles: alone it accounts for 24% of total emissions, reaching 30% if the voices of disposal and transport are included.

Creating a more sustainable alternative to recycling
University studies (University of Wageningen and Politecnico di Milano) and European experiments show that returnable vacuum has better environmental performance and is, therefore, preferable to recycling within short distances (not exceeding 200 km).

Following the strong increase in raw material (due to European geopolitical tensions), which also affected glass, together with the desire to reduce the impact of the production chain, Braccia Rese in 2023 started the B2B experimentation of returnable vacuum (var) on two product lines (the red wines “Gambai” and “Torch”), giving life to the “Bottiglie Rese” project which, in the first year (2023), allowed the reuse of about 900 bottles (6% of total production).
Future intention: apply the return on a minimum number of bottles from each product line, rather than just two references.
Short distances, a fundamental element:
The supply chain activated, to make the var effective and practical, is divided into a radius of about 100km from the wine production area: it involves wineries and restaurants in the province of Cuneo and Turin, who undertake to return the empty bottles (including the cardboard that contained them) to start cleaning them at the New Biemmepi bottle sanitizer company in Neive (Cuneo).
Rethink the label to support a virtuous practice:
During the washing phase, to avoid problems when removing the label (which can cause aesthetic defects and require the use of chemical products), gluing on glass has been ruled out, creating a foldable that hangs around the neck of the bottles that is fixed with lacquer wax as a guarantee seal.
A simple habit to adopt:
To start using bottles already used previously, the company simply had to communicate the choice to the ASL and update the self-control manual with the description of the methods of the procedure adopted (collection, washing and storage).
bottles reused the first year
Distance traveled by bottles
economic savings on the purchase of new bottles
restaurants involved
• Restaurants and wine bars
• Bottle washing and sanitizing company (New Biemmepi from Neive - Cuneo)
Limits to consider
• Request for storage space by restaurant businesses
• It is not feasible for export
• Need to have the same shape as bottles
Potential
• Take the road to the logistics of a B2B to B2C var
• Create a territorial var system: the need to formally harmonize bottles
• Create a handbook with the basic steps for adopting the practice to stimulate replicability.
2019
Braccia Rese is the wine project of 3 Piedmontese boys (Elia, Livio and Giovanni) who produce about 11,000 bottles of wine every year. I am a designer who decided to become a winemaker, a surveyor with the desire to continue to live the family vineyard and an oenologist with the intention of making good wine in my home territory. The name Braccia Rese tells of distant paths of life and of people who choose to give back their arms to agriculture, to live near the hills of their home and to tell the story of the territory outside the local borders. The project was created with the aim of recovering the grandparents' native vines (such as Neretta Cuneese) acting according to the principles of sustainability.
