“In two years, we received 164 applications. Apart from six Italians, we have all met foreigners, almost all of them of African origin. Everyone has always known only the worst side of vineyards, namely violence and exploitation. Today, 24 people who have taken the course are hired in the 12 partner companies.” (July 2024)

sfide

• Difficulty finding trained labor in the viticulture profession, since it is not sufficiently available in the area with respect to the needs expressed by the companies.

source: CRC Foundation, 2020, Quaderno 38 on Migrant Labor in Agriculture, Cuneo

• Critical issues related to the third-party account/contract of the vineyard processing service to external bodies, in terms of the scarcity of skills provided with risky effects on the yield and protection of the value of the vine, difficulty in monitoring the employment relationships provided with exposure of companies to the risk of sanctions and compromise of respect for the rights of the workers involved.

• Social problems in the area, deriving from the poor organization of labor needs in the agricultural sector, which determine conditions of vulnerability and hardship of workers in social, housing and economic terms.

description

The Accademia della Vigna is an initiative, tested for the first time in 2022, that innovatively integrates the dimensions of training and work experience in the wine sector, with the aim of promoting one of the most important productive vocations.

It offers specialized training of 150 hours (complete with modules related to safety issues and trade union material) for vineyard managers with the purpose of promoting employment in wineries that are looking for competent labor.

The model is based on a principle of co-responsibility that involves beneficiaries and companies in a joint path of mutual added value:

• the Academy researches and selects people interested and in need of training, using specific parameters and input evaluation indicators aimed at identifying the factors of resilience and continuity of the worker over time;

• the beneficiary is hired for 12 months by the company and works as an employee, while training (learning by doing);

• at the same time, Weco supports the beneficiary in a process of strengthening individual autonomy (orientation and handling administrative and fiscal practices, access to basic digital services, transport management, support in accessing the home), for 360° personal care;

• at the end of the training course, the two subjects (worker and company) have learned to know each other professionally and humanly: this facilitates and contributes to the opportunity for the beneficiary to extend their work experience through the contractual extension, and for the company to hire a person trained and welcomed in a 360° life path as a team.

The service also provides companies with:

• support in communicating the social and cultural value generated, valuing CSR;

• continuous training courses for the development of the human capital of its staff.

The Academy is financially covered by the company (20%), the Foragri Interprofessional Fund (60%) and local funding bodies (20%)

The service fully embodies R+ (Relate with Care), since it contributes to the protection of decent, conscious, fairly paid and responsible work.

considerazioni di ricerca

Limits to consider

• the Academy exposes companies to making an important commitment to the social sphere of sustainable development: it could implement a training focus on environmental sustainability with a view to “responsibility for integral sustainability”

Opportunity

• the model can be replicated in other contexts and is numerically scalable;

• the model, extended to certain phases of the vinification process, could bring great socio-environmental added value;

• the attractive model for companies that are already very sensitive to social and environmental issues: how to extend the audience? Through preventive training for companies?

• support for the creation of a living condition “worth living” for those who have difficulty integrating into the social fabric;

• the employment issue is addressed alongside the topic of the right to housing, necessary for the person's psycho-physical balance.
