“Recycled glass often experiences a decrease in quality due to contamination. In the recovery process, glass mixed with other materials (called 'false friends') may suffer a reduction in quality due to melting at different temperatures. Our process maintains the original quality of the glass, because there is no fusion in the Rendivetro process.” (rendivetro.com)

sfide

Disseminate knowledge and awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of the practice of Returning Vacuum (VaR) and combat disposable and disposable, offering companies process innovation.

Make accessible and practicable the VaR, together with and alongside the practice of recycling, for bottles sold locally (within 200/300 km from the place of production/regional borders).

Offer a concrete answer to the proposed Regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR — Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) presented on 30 November 2022 by Frans Timmermans, vice-president of the European Commission and commissioner of the EuropeanGreen Deal, which aims to reduce packaging per capita, single-use and packaging waste.

Enhancing the reusability of a glass bottle, which for the water industry, where the practice is widespread, reaches up to about 30 reuses, with an average percentage of waste per use of 3.13%.

description

Rendivetro helps companies reduce their environmental impact by offering a HACCP compliant collection, sanitization and return service for empty glass bottles, preventing them from becoming waste. The service is aimed at today, 2024, mainly at companies in the Tuscany region.

The strict process applied ensures that each reused bottle meets high quality standards.

The project was founded in 2022 in the university environment, within Unifi. In March 2023, the project won the first prize of Impresa Campus (Unifi business support program) and between April 2023 and May 2024 it evolves thanks to 2 incubation courses at ILMIP (Murate Idea Park), starting 2 small and large scale experiments, until today it becomes an innovative startup.

The second process test (still in progress in 2024) involves 5 large, medium and small wineries and is focused on the bottles used for tastings conducted in the same cellars. The bottles are transported to a sanitization company based in the province of Cuneo, since it is the only one in Italy to have accepted the collaboration.

Although the bottles cover more than 200km per trip (route: Tuscany-Piedmont and back), a distance that research shows to be the optimal distance to guarantee maximum environmental performance, the attention of the reality has been focused on improving transport efficiency so that the practice remains preferable to recycling. In fact, as per the will of fully operational service, the truck that transports the bottles travels only with a full load: 36 wine cages that carry a total of 600 bottles.

The future objectives of the reality are:

internalize the sanitization process of bottles (sanitization, label removal, capsule removal, washing and drying) and palletizing of cages, equipped with industrial equipment and ad hoc spaces;

Contain movement Bottles within 200 km to create a 100% virtuous regional flow (great limit of the test);

extend the process by involving beverage administration sites (today the customers are exclusively the wineries);

develop an innovative label removal system, without the use of chemical solvents and avoiding scraping (during research);

• make competitive market prices and stable compared to the purchase of new and recycled glass bottles;

acquire an environmental certification, which can be communicated by the participating companies as an added value.

Limits to consider

• unfortunately today the service does not calculate the environmental footprint of the service, so it appears that the real value of the practice is not “commercially” communicable, except through general estimates;

• aesthetic attention in the world of wine is very present and binding (tendency to have personalized bottles and low tolerance for any imperfections due to washing processes): is it possible that positive environmental impacts undermine aesthetic taboos? The environmental benefit is also frustrated by non-aesthetic problems: price, need for storage space, timing, reduced knowledge and awareness of the critical environmental issues of the glass system;

• VaR is often seen as competing with recycling, leaving no room for comparison and adoption of practice: greater knowledge is needed on the distinct potential of the two practices

Opportunity

• The positive results collected during the test could increase companies' confidence in VaR
